Today, many consumers check the preservatives used in cosmetic products before they buy with the intention to avoid controversial ingredients.

The number of preservatives listed in Annex V is shrinking, so if everyone sticks to these materials, exposure to consumers will rise. How can formulators develop protected and regulatory compliant formulas with high consumers acceptance?

The answer is green chemistry ingredients with additional antimicrobial properties.

Many beauty brands have been using this strategy for over twenty years with thousands of products on the market proving multi-functionals work even if they require a more complex approach.

The key “ingredients” for successful protection are:

  • having Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) during manufacturing
  • a selection process
  • a testing strategy in place

Another reason why preservatives are in the spotlight is their potential impact on the human skin microbiome which is being researched at the University of Pavia.
